Living with a disability can present a wide range of challenges for some individuals. As such, securing Social Security Disability benefits is essential when it comes to addressing living expenses. Unfortunately, the application and approval process for SSD benefits can be complex and lengthy. Additionally, many applicants are met with denials, which can be discouraging.

What if you were recently diagnosed with a serious disease or medical condition? A long wait and a potential for a denial and a need to appeal may extend beyond the time an applicant has left to live. This unfortunate situation is why compassionate allowance was established.

When an individual is suffering from a serious medical condition they believe would qualify them for disability benefits, they have the ability to expedite the review process under a program known as compassionate allowance. It allows the Social Security Administration to expedite applications in certain cases. This can apply in cases involving applicants who are  suffering rare health conditions, cancers, adult brain disorders and childhood health disorders that meet the standard for disability established by the agency and the diagnosis was confirmed by a doctor.

Currently, the SSA has a running list of over 280 conditions that would make an individual eligible for Compassionate Allowance. In addition to being on this list, the disability must significantly limit the applicant’s ability to work for at least one year.

Timeline and process

Those applying for Compassionate Allowance can do so directly of the SSA’s website. These applications are automatically processed once submitted. With the use of computer screening technology, the agency can quickly identify applications with a high probability to be eligible for Compassionate Allowance.

Those with a verified condition on the agency’s list could receive their approval within a few weeks. Keep in mind that more complex cases take longer to review, as the medical records can be extensive. As such, it could take up to four months for the SSA to make their decision.

Except for a few conditions, immediate payment of benefits is not granted after an approval. There is a required five month waiting period after being approved for the Compassionate Allowances program. And for those denied compassionate allowance, you can appeal within 60 days of receiving the determination notice. Because apply for disability benefits can be a complex and overwhelming process, it is import to understand your rights and legal options.
